The Wymondham Chess Club is thrilled to announce the start of the new chess season in mid-September. This year marks a historic milestone for our club as we proudly field four teams for the first time ever. Our teams for the upcoming season are:
The formation of the Finches is a testament to the growing popularity of chess and the influx of new members. Many of our new players discovered their passion for chess during the lockdown, playing online, and are now eager to transition to over-the-board play.
One of the most anticipated matches of the season is the intra-club derby between the Wrens and Owls. This friendly rivalry promises to be an exciting and competitive encounter, showcasing the talent within our club.
Last season saw the Wrens win Division 4, while the Eagles and Owls both secured second place in their respective divisions. These achievements highlight the strength and depth of our teams.
In preparation for the new season, Cor Dekker, the Team Captain of the Wymondham Eagles, held a well-attended workshop on the topic of “How to Avoid Traps in the Opening.” The workshop was a success and led to many questions and topical conversations, further enhancing our members’ skills and knowledge.
Our junior club, which started at the beginning of the school summer holidays, has already attracted the attention of some talented players. These young talents have rapidly moved into the senior club, bringing fresh energy and enthusiasm. We are excited to see them quickly gaining knowledge and experience, and we look forward to their contributions in the upcoming season.
To further promote the club and its activities, you may have met our chair, Eric Bradley, and some of the members at the Summer Fun Day at Ketts Park on 31st Aug 24. They really enjoyed meeting and playing against many young players interested in the game, fostering a love for chess in the community.
Our club caters to a diverse range of players. Some members enjoy playing casually and socially, while others are keen to compete and test their skills in a more formal setting. Regardless of their preference, all members are welcome and encouraged to participate in the new season.
Reflecting on our achievements from the previous season, we are proud of the progress we have made and are excited about the goals we have set for the upcoming season. Our aim is to continue promoting chess within the local community and to encourage more people to take up this wonderful game.
We look forward to an exciting and competitive season ahead. Let’s make this a memorable year for the Wymondham Chess Club!
